AI Overview - Difference Between Trained and Untrained Singers

AI Overview

Trained singers use structured physiological and technical coordination—such as supported diaphragmatic breathing, controlled laryngeal positioning, and smooth register transitions—whereas untrained singers often rely on natural instinct and face issues like vocal strain or inconsistent tone. [1, 2]
Key Physiological and Technical Differences
  • Breath Support: Trained singers use coordinated diaphragmatic breath support and control for better stamina and phrasing, while untrained singers often have unstable breath support. [1, 2]
  • Vocal Cord Closure & Resonance: Trained voices feature efficient vocal fold closure, proper placement, and manipulated resonance for projection and varied timbre. Untrained voices often suffer from limited resonance or muscle tension. [1]
  • Register Transitions: Trained singers demonstrate smooth register coordination (moving between chest and head voice), whereas untrained singers often hit abrupt register breaks. [1]
  • Stamina & Consistency: Studies like those featured on PubMed show that vocally trained individuals have significantly higher Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) scores, reflecting superior maximum phonation time, tone control, and reduced jitter. [1]
Talent vs. Training
  • Natural Gift vs. Mechanics: Some singers start with an instinctive ability to mimic sounds or produce a good tone effortlessly, as discussed in communities like Reddit. However, raw talent alone differs from deliberate technique. [1, 2, 3]
  • Versatility: While untrained singers may sound great on specific songs or styles, vocal training expands a singer's range, safety, adaptability, and ability to handle the natural aging or fatigue of the voice. [1, 2]

See when he first got recommended on my feed I was like this seems cool and educational about general opera stuff especially older ways of singing. Though there were comments every now and then that I disagreed with, but nothing I haven’t heard echoed in the opera community before.

Then I started watching his Porgy and Bess video and it became very clear what I was dealing with lmao.

40

And the people in opera land rejoices. I think he might’ve been a lurker here. I remember getting into an argument with someone that ended when either me or someone else said something to the effect of “Emilio you are a pain in the ass” suddenly the convo came to a screeching halt.

34

I had the unfortunate association with him decades ago. Didnt know how extreme he would get but somehow he made his way into a casual gathering zoom call during covid he decided it was the right time to commondere it to try to get everyone on board with just starting a school with him in Europe but he had no school building, nor any concrete plans. He's pathological and self hating.

33

Ok, I had some agreement in regards to Regie productions and modern voices. But I got the vague feeling from the snide asides he made and their tone that he was at least Fash adjacent, so I stopped listening.

I had no idea it was THAT bad. These comments are eye opening.

Who could have guessed the right-wing racist would also be a dishonest businessman???

102

we should start posting "the corrupt rightwingers" everywhere, as they maliciously spread "the violent left" some time ago

But his all-caps rant seemed so reasonable!

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Who?

Yeehaw "pardner"!

14

The leopards ate my face!!! Emilio Pons is a trashy individual who we should not be giving a platform.

14

Man this guy is just an "Anti-Expert" With Pons, there’s a political agenda you can actually read. In the manifesto he coauthored with Christopher Macchio, they call for government power and conservative philanthropy to reorganize American cultural life, including a MAGA-aligned foundation to rival Ford and Mellon. I find that authoritarian. Someone proposing to put cultural institutions under his preferred political influence deserves scrutiny when presenting himself as a corrective to ideological interference.

"the arts cannot currently fulfill their
quintessential mission to educate, uplift and
civilize the general public through the pursuit of
beauty and excellence." Amazing. Any thoughts on the shape and size of people's skulls, Dr. Pons?

u/ScatologicalComposer avatar

Yeah because Emilio is a fascist piece of shit who shouldn’t be anywhere near music; I don’t care if he’s actually a good singer

32

The funny part is he’s not, he’s jealous of people with careers and tries to tear them down. Any semblance him being objective about singers goes out the window when you realize he just wanted to be part of the in-crowd. Good riddance!

29
u/mastermalaprop avatar

Jeez his Instagram is deranged and disturbing

11

Oh no! Anyway.

Yes, and?

7

🤣🤣🤣… how does someone manage to get themselves to be so universally despised?

7
u/DetectiveDeepDive avatar

Surprised it took this long tbh

12
u/Expert_Mistake_486 avatar

Literally same. From day one of seeing his content I was waiting for something like this to happen. People like this don't usually hang around for too long

8
u/screen317 avatar

Who?

5
u/Openthroat avatar

Shocked?

2

Not surprising AT ALL

2

Pedagogy aside, he’s a proud alt-right racist who has bragged about wanting black people eradicated from NYC, so idk why he ever had a platform

59

Who hates that he is Mexican so much that he actively tells people he's European only. He was always this way but much more covert.

31
u/varro-reatinus avatar

What the fuck lmao

8
u/SimonBoccanegra avatar

I cancelled him months ago. Nasty little prick.

24

Maybe don’t list his music academy on your resume, if you went there.

The thing is he really wasn’t wrong about a lot of things with regie theater and certain singers being bad. The overall decline of vocal ability is definitely not something he just made up. He was a crappy guy though

-3
u/KajiVocals avatar

There’s a lot of other voices to follow than him. And he’s not just a ‘crappy’ guy. Much worse.

He has nothing to do with TiO. I’d know as I was in there.

12
u/lennonade1 avatar

He's not related with the thisisopera in fact he's not following the strict thisisopera rules even tho he likes corelli and del monaco.
