PMV Rants Against Opera Singers Using Gastric Bypass & Gastric Banding Surgeries for Weight Loss

Pimp My Voice Rants Against Opera Singers Using Gastric Bypass and Gastric Banding Surgeries for Weight Loss  - A Study

Stomach stapling is the worse thing an opera singer could do to themselves and if I must say, is disrespectful to the instrument of the body.

In continuance of my rant against the stomach stapling generation of opera singers who didn't think enough of themselves to go to Bally's, Lucille Roberts, New York Sports Clubs, Jenny Craig, or Weight Watchers, but had their stomachs cut out, stapled, lap banded, there is another singer to add to the list, who had the surgery  a few years back, but now has no opera gigs on Operabase and we can't seem to find in any international opera houses lately... A 40 Year old promising black Verdian soprano who sounded perfect just about 3-4 years ago.  This shouldn't happen. Opera singers should not be changing their instruments by using surgery to get that Hollywood look that the visualists are pushing for by risking the beauty of their voices.  This is not an acceptable weight loss solution for opera singers. The risk of losing one's standing in the world of opera is too big of a risk to take for a slim body through stomach stapling which is changing the instrument.  The real issue is how do you downsize or rightsize your weight without changing your instrument.

Maria Callas Lost Weight and they said her sound changed

The stomach stapling shortcut has ruined several careers it seems. And instead of addressing career issues, one particular singer made light of the surgery joking that it made her drink and look for men online, while receiving attention from men looking for fat gals. This was not educating us. Let me explain the fact that while we don't know exactly what happens to singers voices after they have Gastric Bypass, Gastric Stapling, or Lap Band surgery,  from our observations it changes the voice by making it thin, tinny, hard to control, it affects the breathing, and removes the bloom. Some of these issues could be caused by malnutrition itself by way of not really being able to eat enough food....not really being able to eat enough food is not normal.  Opera singers are not regular people. We are athletes. Singing opera is a marathon of singing.  It is very athletic.  We need nutrition, we need food, we need to eat. We need carbs. Yes. Speghetti an hour before going on stage.

Is there is a healthy way to manage our weight without surgery?
Yes there is.  We each have to find that for ourselves and modify our lifestyles so that we may make healthy food choices with the consultation of a professional dietician and professional exercise coaches.  Stomach stapling is the worse thing an opera singer could do to themselves and if I must say, is disrespectful to the instrument of our bodies.  If we all took a little time from our day to walk 3-4 times a week for an hour, took swimming,  ate low fat foods,  and a nice portioned dinner...we could all be healthy and happy.  No.  This lifestyle is not a get.fit.quick.fix but why would anyone want to a get fit quick fix on a body that is in the throws of a life of marathon  singing?  Is the mantel questionable.

From the medical professionals

Malnutrition, Infection, Shock to the System
The potentially deadly complications can include malnutrition, infection, and bowel and gallbladder problems. The surgery itself can be a dangerous shock to the system, particularly for older patients.
Gastric bypass is the most common U.S. obesity surgery. About 160,000 people undergo gastric bypass surgery every year.

Gastric Bypass and Gastric Banding Surgeries are NOT Normal
Gastric bypass refers to creating a small thumb-size pouch in the upper stomach which connects directly to the small intestine, thereby bypassing the majority of the stomach and leading to a greatly reduced stomach size. It is the more invasive procedure of the two surgeries, but less widely performed due to increased BMI requirements to qualify for insurance coverage. Gastric banding refers to a surgery that inserts an inflatable silicone band into your stomach to create a smaller stomach size. Short-term, these procedures usually do produce significantly greater weight loss compared to lifestyle modification. Both procedures limit the amount of food you can consume, and the rapid weight loss is clearly the natural effect of this forced starvation produced by the smaller stomach size. But in exchange for this rapid weight loss, the health risks are VERY high, and long-term safety and effectiveness according to the featured article above are "worse than expected".    To be continued.

Jonas Kaufmann - Withdraws From Second Met Performance

The star tenor Jonas Kaufmann has withdrawn from Saturday’s sold-out matinee performance of “Carmen” at the Metropolitan Opera, citing illness — meaning that Mr. Kaufmann, who was scheduled to sing only two performances there this season, will miss both.

Yonghoon Lee, the tenor who substituted for Mr. Kaufmann after he withdrew from Wednesday night’s performance, planned to do so again on Saturday.

Mr. Kaufmann’s New York fans will apparently have to wait until next season to hear him again: He is scheduled to star in the full run of a new production of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” at the Met opposite the soprano Kristine Opolais.

Jonas Kaufmann cancels ‘Carmen’ (Cash Cow Bails)

Jonas Kaufmann

The Met announced Monday morning that Jonas Kaufmann has canceled his first scheduled performance as Don José on Wednesday because he was suffering from the flu and had been unable to travel to New York as scheduled on Sunday.

The Met said that Mr. Kaufmann hoped to recover in time to fly to New York later this week so he could perform as scheduled at the Saturday matinee.

BOOM:  What the uncertainty means for the secondary-ticket market for scalpers and online brokers remains to be seen.

and Comments:

a. I wouldn't pay $1,000 a ticket to hear God sing.
b. God, Kaufmann. Same thing.
